Fuel Pump Repair – Charlotte, NC
Signs of a failing pump
- If you are traveling at around 50mph and the vehicle begins to jerk and splutter, this is a sign the pump is working on and off.
- If you normally have a vehicle which is good on gas and then it starts to use more, this is another indicator there is a problem.
- You may hear clicking sounds when the engine is running
If you suffer from any of these problems, you should have a mechanic check your fuel system, it could be a case of a blocked fuel filter which is stopping any contaminants from the fuel tank entering into the fuel system.
This is another way that can lead to premature wearing of the fuel pump as it starts to run dry with not enough lubrication from the fuel passing through it.
A technician can easily check the fuel pickups, fuel pump relays the filter and the electrical connectors to make sure all these are working correctly. If there is a genuine fault with the pump, it is quite an easy task to replace this, the technician would then probably change the fuel filter at the same time in case this was what caused the fuel pump failure in the first place.
Fuel System Cleaning
Although fuel injected systems differ from a vehicle with a carburetor, the basic fuel system is the same. You have the gas tank, fuel filter, fuel pump and then the method in which fuel is sent to the engine.
If you have any fuel pump or fuel filter problems, it is worth having a complete fuel system clean, this would comprise of the elements below:
- Clean your fuel system starting from your gas tank and adding a recommended premium fuel and system cleaner additive.
- Clean the fuel injectors or clean the carburetor, the intake valves, the engine combustion chambers using fuel and fuel system cleaner, this can remove any deposits that cause internal parts to stick.
- Use a fuel and fuel system cleaner that will remove water or moisture from your fuel system.
- Lubricate the throttle body and throttle moving parts with a corrosion inhibitor and remove old varnish, dirt and any carbon deposits from the throttle casing and throttle plates.
- Dissolve any deposits from your engine’s intake manifolds, runners and valves, along with the combustion chambers with a multi-stage intake deposit cleaner.
- Leave engine cleaner resting in your engine that will soften hard carbon deposits over a period of time and help reduce any long-term build-up inside the catalytic converter.
By cleaning the whole system, you can restore lost engine performance and regain some fuel economy, you will also be safe in the knowledge your fuel pump is in a fine working order and will not fail due to any other components.
